Business Challenge:

With a commitment to environmental stewardship, Worldwise recognizes the importance of measuring their carbon foorpint in accordance with their mission: offering environmentally-responsible products that perform as well as or better than their alternatives. Carbon and energy management, as well as public disclosure reporting, are a growing interest among Worldwise stakeholder groups. As a result, Worldwise has committed to making carbon management a core part of their corporate strategy going forward.

Our Approach:

ClearCarbon helped Worldwise, Inc. complete its first corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory for the years 2008 and 2009.

• ClearCarbon kicked off the inventory covering basic carbon accounting principles and the general process for conducting a GHG inventory.
• ClearCarbon helped Worldwise define organizational boundaries and other key parameters.
• Together, Worldwise and ClearCarbon collected usage and cost data associated with US and China operations, taking into account on-site fuels, purchased electricity, business travel, employee commuting, waste disposal and recycling.
• ClearCarbon calculated Scope 1 and 2 and some Scope 3 emissions for Worldwise and created an actionable report summarizing result findings.
• ClearCarbon delivered a complete GHG Inventory Methodology document detailing the corporate inventory process, allowing Worldwise to conduct future inventories in-house.

Value Created:

Worldwise, Inc. gained valuable insight into their operations by uncovering the financial and environmental impacts of their carbon emissions. By establishing their baseline GHG inventory, Worldwise is positioned to move forward with setting carbon reduction targets and designing strategies to achieve those goals. The inventory results provided by ClearCarbon are also easily incorporated into public disclosure reports, such as Walmart’s Sustainability Index.

The GHG inventory process introduced Worldwise to additional environmental initiatives for carbon reduction further upstream in their supply chain, such as a carbon Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) that can be used to discover the cradle-to-grave impacts of a specific product.
