Wal-Mart Corporate GHG Inventory

Business Challenge:

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (Wal-Mart) needed technical experts to assist with measuring its carbon footprint for the first time in 2005, in order to respond to the Carbon Disclosure Project’s CDP4 questionnaire. Once the initial task was completed, Wal-Mart has needed its carbon footprint revised, updated, and reported to CDP annually.

Wal-Mart carbon footprint

Our Approach:

  • ClearCarbon’s staff collected and reviewed data for Wal-Mart’s operations, including more than 7,000 global locations and its entire corporate vehicle fleet.
  • The GHG data collection process and quantification methodologies were designed specifically to address each direct and indirect emissions source, to ensure a complete baseline estimate.
  • ClearCarbon established a location-specific baseline from which to track future emissions and identify carbon management opportunities.
  • Over a four-year period, ClearCarbon has quantified and analyzed more than 79 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) emissions for Wal-Mart.
  • Building on the initial corporate GHG inventory, ClearCarbon has been able to update and re-baseline Wal-Mart’s footprint as the company evolves through acquisitions, divestitures and changing operations.
  • ClearCarbon has continually enhanced the baseline data quality with better and more efficient data collection procedures to ensure that Wal-Mart is reporting with the utmost level of data integrity and quality.

Value Created:

ClearCarbon successfully measured Wal-Mart’s initial carbon footprint in 2005, tracking millions of data points and information sources. The baseline corporate GHG inventory was reviewed and independently certified for quality by a third party, the Environmental Resources Trust, and was praised for its accuracy, completeness, and depth. Wal-Mart disclosed its carbon footprint publicly for the first time in the CDP4 report, and has continued to do so through 2008. With ClearCarbon’s help, Wal-Mart was selected as a member of the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) in 2007 and 2008.
