United Nations Corporate GHG Inventory
Visit web site
Business Challenge:
The United Nations was seeking to create the same carbon preparedness internally that it advocates with its external policies. In order to meet this goal, the United Nations recognized the need to estimate its organization-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to understand its operational impact and begin calculating the cost of becoming climate neutral. For this first inventory exercise, the boundaries included all agencies, staff, and associated office space, including regional offices and field offices.
Our Approach:
- ClearCarbon designed the GHG data collection process and quantification methodologies to collect direct and indirect emissions sources within inventory boundaries to ensure a complete baseline estimate.
- ClearCarbon contacted field offices worldwide and converted emissions source activity data into common metrics.
- ClearCarbon utilized estimation techniques where data were not available to create a complete estimate.
Value Created:
ClearCarbon inventoried all corporate GHG emissions in a complete, detailed, accurate, and transparent process to create the GHG baseline estimate in a manner that can be easily replicated and updated over the coming years. The baseline inventory tracked and calculated GHG emissions from electricity purchases, fuel use, and business travel. The emissions measured were of sufficient detail and accuracy for estimating the cost of achieving climate neutrality. However, ClearCarbon identified data gaps and areas for improving consistency and accuracy of future inventories.
