Business Challenge:

As part of its corporate initiative to dramatically reduce energy usage and carbon emissions, News Corporation needed to engage television productions to aid operations staff in reducing filming footprints, but also to engage the creative staff and writers to incorporate climate change themes into programming.

Project Details:

• ClearCarbon visited numerous production sites to meet with operations teams to discuss opportunities to reduce the footprint of filming.
• ClearCarbon provided a ‘carbon 101’ overview for all staff to provide familiarity on key emissions sources.
• ClearCarbon led a brainstorming dialogue among the production teams to identify tangible and practical recommendations to reduce electricity consumption, save fuel, and reduce waste.
• ClearCarbon also was available to each show’s creative teams and writers to answer questions about climate change and energy, so subject matter could be effectively implemented into show scripts.

Value Created:

ClearCarbon, as part of a large team of internal and external experts, helped to begin a highly collaborative group within 20th Century Fox Television focused on reducing the footprint associated with television production. The effort has transitioned to nearly 100% internally led effort, with “students” of the initial roadshow, now experts in production carbon footprint reductions. Fox has hundreds of production improvements that have already been implemented including, lighting, bio-diesel generators, catering, set reuse, and many more. Climate change subject matter has been incorporated into many shows’ scripts and also PSAs, using shows’ talent.
