Business Challenge:

After the 2007 launch of their Global Energy Initiative in which CEO Rupert Murdoch declared the company would achieve carbon neutrality by 2010, News Corporation was looking for trusted advisors to assist with improving the data collection and management of their global footprint data, carbon reduction strategy, and public disclosure.

Our Approach:

• ClearCarbon’s staff reviewed News Corporation’s baseline fiscal year 2006 (FY06) data for accuracy and completeness, making adjustments and requesting additional data as appropriate for re-baselining purposes.
• ClearCarbon created custom data templates to capture data from more than 20 global business units in more than 50 countries for News Corporation’s FY07 inventory.
• After News Corporation’s acquisition of Dow Jones, ClearCarbon worked with Dow Jones’ energy managers to incorporate this business unit into the global corporate inventory and re-baseline their emissions in accordance to the GHG Protocol.
• In the third year, the opportunities ClearCarbon identified to streamline the data collection process were incorporated into the design and configuration of a web-based application to enable News Corporation to directly manage their corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) data.
• ClearCarbon staff facilitated the launch and user training for the Enterprise Carbon Management system and conducted rigorous quality assurance and data validation measures to ensure high quality emissions results for News Corporation’s annual Carbon Disclosure Project submissions.
• ClearCarbon staff prepares detailed annual findings reports for each of News Corporation’s business units to help the Global Energy Initiative team leaders better understand their footprint, report their progress towards the corporate reduction goals, and recommend energy and cost savings measures specific to the dynamics of each business.

ClearCarbon has helped News Corporation to continually measure and improve the quality of their corporate GHG inventory. As a result, News Corporation and its affiliated companies have worked closely with ClearCabon’s staff on numerous projects that extend beyond the measurement of their corporate GHG emissions in efforts to complement their aggressive corporate energy reduction commitments.
