Business Challenge:

20th Century Fox Television (Fox) wanted to make its hit primetime drama “24” the world’s first carbon neutral television series. It solicited the help of ClearCarbon to calculate its seventh season carbon footprint, address opportunities to reduce its emissions, and purchase carbon offsets where reductions weren’t available.

Our Approach:

  • ClearCarbon’s staff developed a complete greenhouse gas assessment of the series’ seventh season production by collecting data related to onsite generator and special effects fuels; transportation of cast, crew and materials; the electricity needed to power Fox stages, sets and offices; as well as staff and talent air travel.
  • Working with Fox, ClearCarbon quantified the reductions resulting from the show’s energy efficiency and waste reduction initiatives, including hybrid vehicle use, replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lighting, and using biofuels where possible.
  • ClearCarbon calculated the carbon footprint associated with the production of “24: Season 7”, showing that through greener production practices, the show was able to reduce its footprint by 43%.
  • The show’s remaining tons of CO2e were offset through the purchase of carbon credits that meet the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) requirements and are retired through the Bank of New York Mellon.
  • Following completion of the project, ClearCarbon provided communications support to the Fox team during the media announcement.

Value Created:

Fox successfully achieved its goal of having “24” become carbon neutral and launched a public awareness campaign of its accomplishment during the series premiere. The broadcasts featured testimonials from Kiefer Sutherland and other “24” stars informing the audience of steps they can take to help the environment. This was also a key step for News Corporation’s goal to become carbon neutral by the end of 2010, a feat publically supported by CEO Rupert Murdoch. The show is also instrumental in encouraging all film studios to promote environmental stewardship in the production of future television series.
