Business Challenge:
The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is one of the most influential and successful non-governmental, non-profit organizations working to protect the environemnt today. The trustees are required to travel a substantial amount throughout the year to promote the interest of the EDF and continue to ensure its success. This travel results in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and the trustees expressed a desire to offset these emissions with certified carbon offsets. With a limited budget, the EDF requested that ClearCarbon develop an easily understandable one page worksheet to assist trustees in accurately calculating and then offsetting the emissions from their travel.
Our Approach:
- ClearCarbon began by surveying EDF staff to ascertain the characteristics of travel taken by the trustees.
- ClearCarbon developed a computer model to calculate emissions based on these types of travel and determined the most critical inputs required as well as the assumptions that could be made.
- With the help of EDF staff, ClearCarbon refined these input requirements and assumptions to more closely align with the travel specific to EDF trustees.
- ClearCarbon then transposed this model to a printable one page worksheet requiring only a handful of inputs and simple math in order to calculate travel GHG emissions. This document contained simple yet comprehensive instructions and information on how to purchase certified carbon offsets.
Value Created:
ClearCarbon successfully produced a one page document that allowed trustees to conservatively, yet accurately calculate the carbon footprint of their travel and hotel stays. The document provided instructions on how and where to purchase the carbon offsets so that the trustees could offset their travel during or immediately after each trip. Through this worksheet, the EDF trustees are able to “walk the talk” required of such leaders and environmental stewards. ClearCarbon’s strict adherence to the budget allowed the EDF to save resources to be used for environmental stewardship programs.
