Business Challenge:

As a global marine terminal operator with varied operational and energy consumption scenarios, DP World faces many hurdles to collect energy usage and emissions data. To gather all of the data necessary to calculate the company’s corporate GHG footprint, DP World required an easy-to-use interface that could be distributed to all ports and be easily understood by on site personnel.

Our Approach:

• Analyzed DP World’s operations to determine operational boundaries and data collection needs specific to their unique operations.
• Worked with DP World to develop a comprehensive model to enable data collection from all terminals.
• Visited multiple DP World sites to validate model applicability and format.
• Wherever possible, created discrete lists of field choices (drop downs, toggles, etc.) to guide the model user.
• Assisted in determining appropriate carbon intensity measurements tailored to DP World’s operations.
• Consulted with DP World to determine the most appropriate balance between flexibility of the template and rigidity of the data in order to provide useful reporting outputs.
• Provided a summary document detailing areas of improvement and general recommendations for launching, executing, and managing the carbon footprint for DP World.
• Developed an Excel template for easy and accurate collection of data from all ports.
• Ensured the template design is easily adaptable to a web interface, where wide distribution and language translation can be implemented.

Value Created:

ClearCarbon successfully developed a carbon footprint model that could be translated into a web application for release to DP World’s global facilities. The completed model was sent to representative terminals for feedback, which will soon be incorporated into an internal web application for carbon footprinting, further enabling DP World to prioritize and achieve carbon and cost reductions and thus increasing the company’s profitability, while reducing environmental impact.
