Business Challenge:

A confidential food service company was interested in understanding the carbon and water impacts in the supply chains of various food groups at their more than 1,700 locations. By understanding their food supply chains, the company would be well positioned to engage their major suppliers on sustainability issues that matter most to the company.

Our Approach:

• ClearCarbon compiled in-depth reviews of their major food purchasing categories – which include seafood, beef, poultry, grains, fruits, and vegetables.
• In addition to considering the most carbon and water intensive phases of their respective supply chains, ClearCarbon also identified ongoing sustainability initiatives in these industries and potential areas for the application of carbon-reducing measures derived from scientific research.

Value Created:

• ClearCarbon produced a number of detailed reports that outline opportunities to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and increase profitability by cutting costs for both the company and its suppliers.
• The information in these reports will enable our client’s buyers to effectively communicate with their suppliers on sourcing options that involve lower carbon and water footprints.
• This information has also served as a catalyst for conducting a more in-depth, life cycle analysis of one of the company’s supply chains.
