Client Confidential - Chemical Company Carbon Footprint Review
Business Challenge:
In the face of rising energy costs and pending government action regulating carbon emissions, a Fortune 500 chemical company needed to better understand their risk so they turned to ClearCarbon. Having already conducted GHG inventories for their single largest manufacturing facility as well as the corporate headquarters, the client desired to have an experienced and reputable firm review their work and provide guidance as they embarked on an overall corporate GHG inventory.
Our Approach:
- ClearCarbon conducted a scope and boundary review with the client to ensure that all emissions were being identified and accounted for properly in accordance with the GHG Protocol.
- The review included emissions sources such as on-site combustion from a wide range of fuel types, fugitive emissions from gas pipelines and transformers, electricity, and vehicle fuels.
- After the client updated the inventory in accordance with the recommendations from the scope and boundary review, ClearCarbon conducted a detailed review of the emissions calculation methodologies.
- Following the review of the emission calculation methodologies, ClearCarbon reviewed each of the emission factors used in the calculations to verify that the most current available factors were being applied to the GHG inventory.
- Upon completion of this detailed review, ClearCarbon compiled all findings and recommendations into a clear and actionable log, methodology document and summary report.
Value Created:
ClearCarbon’s summary and clarifications on the scope and boundary conditions of the GHG inventory led to the discovery of emissions that did not match boundary definitions and could now be removed. Conversely, emissions that had not been previously included were identified and recommended for inclusion. Additionally, through ClearCarbon’s services, the client was able to gain a better understanding of the inventory process and the location and availability of data essential to compiling an accurate GHG inventory. ClearCarbon’s council and deliverables provided the client with the tools necessary to embark on producing a full corporate GHG inventory that would be accurate, consistent, and thorough, while meeting the requirements of the GHG Protocol.
