Autodesk Event Footprint
Business Challenge:
Autodesk, a leading design software provider, hosts an annual event for more than 9000 attendees called Autodesk University where customers from all over the world are invited to receive training and learn about all of the products and services Autodesk offers over a period of 5 days. As part of its Sustainability Strategy, Autodesk aims to model best practices in sustainable business, and as such, decided to conduct one of the first carbon footprints of such an event. Because few companies have calculated emissions from events such as conferences, little protocol was available for measuring the GHG inventory of such an event.
Our Approach:
- ClearCarbon began by giving input on scope, boundary, and emissions source reviews.
- ClearCarbon participated in meetings with Autodesk staff, event facility managers, and various vendors and contractors to help explain the purpose of the inventory and to provide guidance on the data collection process for the various emission sources.
- ClearCarbon created a detailed custom data collection template for the venue.
- After Autodesk staff culled data ranging from the travel details of all attendees to metered electricity usage for conference floor space and hotel rooms, ClearCarbon conducted a thorough quality assurance review, compiled this data and authored a Summary Report containing data analysis, source data, and calculation methodologies.
Value Created:
ClearCarbon conducted a benchmarking analysis to allow Autodesk to compare the emission intensity of Autodesk University to other similar events on an “emissions per attendee per day” basis. Additionally, Autodesk was able to supplement their corporate footprint with these Scope 3 emission sources, thus improving their public disclosure and GHG emissions accountability. Lastly, Autodesk was able to identify the primary sources of GHG emissions associated with their major events and initiate plans designed to reduce these emissions and minimize their environmental inpact.
