20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Life Cycle Assessment

Business Challenge:
As an industry leader, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment (TCFHE) has been actively involved in assessing greenhouse gas emissions within all parts of its DVD supply chain. While TCFHE successfully measured its 2006 DVD supply chain footprint, they also saw the need to revisit this study in 2008 in order to quantify several energy and raw material improvements. ClearCarbon conducted both assessments to ensure comparability of results.
Our Approach:
- ClearCarbon reviewed the boundary condition assumptions for the 2006 study and compared these assumptions to the boundary conditions and data availability for 2008.
- The 2006 study was rebaselined to provide direct comparability to the 2008 study. Changes included:
- Update of eGRID emissions factors
- Exclusion of several components that did not meet the materiality threshold
- Updated transportation methodology based on ton-mile data
- Primary data were collected from multiple suppliers including Blu-ray replicators, DVD polypropylene case manufacturers, and transportation logistics operators.
- Results were presented to compare both the 2006 initial study to the 2006 rebaselined footprint and the 2006 rebaselined study to the 2008 footprint.
Value Added:
Upon completion of the 2008 footprint TCFHE was able to quantify several carbon improvements. Raw material consumption emissions decreased by 13 percent almost exclusively due to the decrease in case weight. Transportation emissions decreased by almost 20 percent attributable to an increasing preference for ground transport in place of more carbon-intensive air transport. The DVD replication facility achieved a 10% absolute reduction in emissions due to several energy efficiency initiatives. And perhaps, most importantly, the TCHFE DVD footprint decreased by over 5% on a per unit basis from 2006 to 2008 translating into savings of $10s of Millions based on total DVD’s sold.
