GAME SUPPLY: Game makers get Wal-Mart environmental mandates
By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 2/13/2009
FEB. 13 | BURBANK, Calif.—The home entertainment and videogame industries share many supply chain concerns—and opportunities—it became clear over a day of panels at the Game Supply conference presented on Feb. 11 by Entertainment Merchants Assn. and the Media and Entertainment Services Alliance here. Among them are improving production and distribution efficiencies, environmental sustainability and loss prevention.
Wal-Mart is now implementing packaging reduction and sustainability goals for videogame companies, like the ones DVD suppliers have been dealing with for more than a year. The chain is requiring games makers to reduce package weight to 60 grams by May and 50 grams by October, said Kyle Tanger, president of Clear Carbon Consulting.
“Wal-Mart has an incredibly aggressive sustainability program, and it’s not going away,” said Tanger, adding to gaming conference attendees, “You should get out in front of this.”
